Bestwicks offer fully legal Gel Plates and they pass BSAU 145e Compliancy Standards. Many online sourced GEL PLATES are illegal. There are retailers claiming they are legal, but in actual fact they do not meet the DVLA Regulations.

Can you change the spacing of the letters?

Unfortunately we cannot make plates with incorrectly spaced numbers or letters and will only print legal plates, that have standard solid black lettering.

It is worth noting that due to Police Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras being used extensively now, there is a zero tolerance policy on incorrect plates. We have had numerous customers coming in for replacement plates, that have been fined £100 “on the spot” – even for minor spacing infringements. Some had previously driven past a Mobile Speed Camera Van. These vans are now automatically recording car number plates (you don’t have to be breaking the speed limit for this) and motorists are then being prosecuted and sent a £100 fine in the post! – so please consider this if you are thinking of purchasing non-legal “Show Plates” plates from an online company.

What documents do I need for you to make a Number Plate?

You will need to bring documents to the shop to have your number plate made. We are registered with DVLA and we cannot make reg plates without the paperwork. We require a Driving licence and the V5c” logbook” for the car before we can print plates.

There are a number of alternatives to the V5c but they do have to be issued from DVLA. For instance, if you have purchased Private Plates you will normally have a V750 or a V778. If you have had your plate on retention, an e mailed “E v948” authorisation from DVLA, will also be ok.

If you are unsure of what is required – please contact us for advice.

By law, car number plates have to have a manufacturers name and postcode on the bottom of the plate. We use a very small font for our business name. Actually, it’s the smallest that can be used, whilst still being legally compliant. The reason for this is because we dont believe in using  your  number plate to advertise  our  business –  and  the plate looks a lot nicer!
